J.R. purchased his first guitar in 1963 from what was Woolworth Department Stores in Houston, Texas. The guitar was a no name electric guitar with humbucker pickups. After using this guitar for several years to learn how to play, with very sore fingers and even sometimes bleeding from rusty strings, he learned from an acquaintance that the guitar was basically unplayable and needed new strings and a setup.
With his new found knowledge he found a local guitar tech to give his guitar a once over. After watching this guitar tech change the strings and adjust the action on his guitar he began to be interested in doing his own setups. He soon bought another guitar, this time an acoustic, and attempted to do his own setup on it. Along the way he learned some valuable tips and developed his knowledge in all things about guitar setups.
By 1975 J.R. had become a decent player and had worked as a rhythm and vocalist in several bands. While in these bands he would do setups and minor guitar repairs for the other players in the band. He soon was sought out by other guitar players and bass players in the area from the numerous musicians he had befriended through the years.
J.R. went on to become an electronics and computer technician after working as a machinist for over 10 years.
When it became time to retire and hopefully to live the good life J.R. found he missed having something to do. With some encouragement from some of his musician friends J.R. started his own guitar repair service. Using his skills as a machinist and electronics tech and his love for guitars and playing music it was a natural for him to start working on guitars again.
J.R. attended Nashville Pro Luthier and guitar tech John LeVan's Guitar Workshop to confirm the knowledge and skills he had with the industry standard knowledge and skills needed.
J.R. always gives more when he services a guitar than your big box store and usually can complete most setups in a day or two.
JR,
Thank you so much for the great setup on my Taylor guitar. It plays like a dream and easy on the fingers. It’s making my beginner learning so much easier and enjoyable.
Take care!
Just wanted to thank you, JR, for the work you did on my guitar. It plays wonderfully and sounds fantastic. I have fallen in love with it all over again! I am beyond pleased!
If you need your guitar or bass set-up or looked at for issues, J.R. is the Man! He does a great, thorough job, and his communication is excellent. His expertise and knowledge really shine thru his work. If you need a set-up or repair- please contact J.R. You'll be glad you did! He set-up my Jazz Bass perfectly, inspected all the electronic components - and even polished out some scratches on the faceplate.
Took my guitar here with a terrible buzz. By the next morning, it was repaired and ready to use. It was treated with care and tuned up expertly. Would recommend for anyone who needs tune ups.
JR's Guitar service was great. JR was friendly, knowledgeable, and reasonable. He was very detailed in his explanations and did much more for the usual "setup" than the typical box store. There is a certain quality you get from JR, that you just won't find at the usual chain operation. My family will be back to visit his business. You can be confident taking your stringed instruments to him. He was a real find.
JR has been taking care of my guitars for several years. His knowledge of the guitar is unmatched and his attention to detail is impeccable. His prices are very competitive and turn around time is the best.
5 stars here.
I have known JR for over 20 years and he has maintained my guitars and basses for me. He takes great pride in his work and always completes in a timely manner.
I highly recommend you let JR be your guitar tech.
